Monsoon, Tea and a plate of hot Onion Pakoda

Yes. Finally, the Monsoon is here.

It was raining this evening. That chillness made my baby girl’s nap get a little longer, just enough for me to make an evening snack. What to make? Nothing else can compliment a rainy evening than a ‘Pakoda & Tea’ combo. My husband and my son love Onion pakoda and I thought, why not today?

We usually spend our Tea time at our balcony, thanks to goodness we are really blessed with a nice green view from there. “Wow, Onion pakoda, I love Onion Pakoda”, my son. “Mmmm, just the thing I wanted”, my husband. Me, “Aahh, there is nothing like a tea time with family on a rainy day. This evening can’t get any better.

A tiny guy in a bright blue outfit. How cute. I ran in and brought my cam, he just stayed still and gave me a wonderful pose. Look at him, he is one smart guy.

Oh, I almost forgot about my pakoda. It was hot, crunchy, spicy, yummy and as my husband said, right for the chill evening. All in all, we had a nice tea time. I wanted to share the recipe with you, so that you may have one too. Here we go,

Prep time : 15 mins

Cooking time : 15 mins

Serves : 4.

Ingredients :

Onion (Big) – 4 Nos

Besan flour – 1/4 cup

Rice flour – 1 Table spoon

Green Chilli – 2 (Chopped)

Ginger(chopped) – 1/2 tea spoon

Curry leaves – Chopped

Turmeric powder – 1/2 tea spoon

Chilli powder – 3/4 tea spoon

Jeera powder – 1/4 tea spoon

Asefoetida – A pinch

Baking Soda – A pinch

Salt – as required

Steps:

1. Cut the onions into thin slices. Add salt and keep it closed for 10 mins.

2. Now, you can see that there is a little moisture in the onion salt mix. Add all other ingredients and mix well.

3. Heat oil in a kadai for deep frying. Drop the pakoda mix in shapeless dumplings into the hot oil. Deep fry them till golden brown, flipping the sides.

4. Serve with any chutney or sauce of your choice.

Secrets:

  • The onion slices should be thin enough to fry crunchy.
  • No need to add water to the mix. The onion and salt mix leave enough moisture for the pakoda. If you add water, the you wont get the right consistency.
  • While adding the besan flour, add it in little portions, just like sprinkling. If the flour got proportionally more, you will get  bonda, not pakoda.
